"Read a book"
From time to time between philosophy and anthropology lectures I get time to sit on the oak lawn and read a book not related to anything going on in my life.
Last week this was an alarming book called "the shallows" by Nicholas Carr. In it he describes ,through analysis of the human brain, how the internet is making us more shallow as human beings.
The net gives unbefore seen greater access to knowledge but this is not the same as having greater knowledge. As we browse for information we are constantly flooded with ads and pop ups, our mind training itself to respond in different ways much like any drug alters our neurochemistry and pathway organization. As such the mind yearns for short spasmodic pieces of information which give the illusion of intelligence through sheer number of facts learned.
...a swimming pool of a mind, all only 12 inches deep...
And where does that leave the mind shaped by deep reading? The mind that immerses itself in the universe of a book, rather than simply looking for a few key phrases & paragraphs? The mind that develops through slow, quiet contemplation, mulling over ideas in their entirety, and growing as a result? The mature mind that ponders possibilities & consequences, rather than simply going with the bright, dazzling, digital flow?
Nowhere, it seems...
