Red Bull Music Academy : Rick Wilhite (Fri 19/12)

RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY PRESENTS

RICK WILHITE (3 Chairs/Vibes New & Rare – Detroit)

After a year of bringing the best talent to our shores each and every month, the Red Bull Music Academy wraps up 2014 with an RBMA Club Night that will see Detroit’s underground legend Rick ‘The Godson’ Wilhite at the controls in December.

Bringing over 20 years of rhythm mastery down under, Rick Wilhite will hit clubs nationally including Sydney’s Goodgod on Friday 12th, the Woolly Mammoth in Brisbane on the 13th, Sugar in Adelaide on Thursday 18th, plus Perth’s Geisha on the 19th and finally to Boney in Melbourne on Saturday the 20th. Each city’s best and brightest is also featuring as support with the likes of Parkside, Jimmy Ellis, Ben Taaffe, J’nett and many others set to lend a local hand to the Detroiter’s performance.

When it comes to movers and shakers of Detroit’s electronic scene, you won’t find many more respected, hardworking (or underrated) than Rick Wilhite. Starting out winning high school talent shows and recording rhythms and raps on cassettes in the early 80s, Wilhite has been living and breathing music since the beginning. Deep in the business from end-to-end, he’s been a record buyer as well as a record dealer with his own store (Vibes – New and Rare Music) and also stepped on the other side of the fence as a producer and editor for labels like KDJ and Stilove4music. Above all, he’s a DJ in the old-school sense, shunning modern tech to build tracks from the ground up with actual drum sets, beat boxing and vinyl, recording as DOC, Tech-12, Working Mixx and The Godson, being whoever the music needs him to be.

Collaborative projects are part of his MO, having worked alongside peers and pioneers Derrick May and Juan Atkins and mixed for collective The Rotating Assembly with Marcellus Pittman and RBMA Club Night alumni DJ Dez. But it’s his work with supergroup Three Chairs beside fellow trailblazers Kenny Dixon Jr. and Theo Parrish that earned him his notoriety as they play gigs around the world with energy, heat, Detroit love and no preprograming. Rick Wilhite is a muso that still carries and loves vinyl, one that knows past, present and doesn’t shy away from the future, and most of all knows what a party could and should be.

To witness him unleashed at the RBMA Club Nights, punters must RSVP for free entry, though entry is on a first come, first served basis. With Detroit in the house, the RBMA dance floor is sure to fill up fast. Early arrival is highly advised.
