Bring Back My Girls

By Geisha Bar

Holy shit so I only just discovered RuPaul’s Drag Race (I’ve been busy, OK?).

WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE? Usually I don’t get amongst reality TV shows because, well, my reality is just way more exciting. But I’ve recently had a wee bit of time off, so I thought I’d see what all the fuss was about. Being that I can only access seasons eight and nine on Netflix, I began watching from season eight – that’s the one with Naomi Smalls, Kim Chi and Bob The Drag Queen.

Oh my lord. The makeup! The looks! The performances! THE SHADE. These ladies are so fucking imaginative and creative. I literally did not know just how creatively demanding drag could get, being that I’ve never really been exposed to the scene behind-the-scenes. My respect for Perth queens such as Hannah Conda, Val Nourished and Alexas Armstrong has just been even more renewed, and I didn’t think that was possible. I mean, what an art form. It’s so much more than “pretty dudes in makeup with fierce jokes.” I’m actually almost sad that I’m not a guy because if I were, I think drag would be such an incredible form of self-expression. I have definitely drank the Kool-Aid here, guys.

So can I please implore every single one of you who hasn’t already done this, get on down to the Court’s Drag Factory on a Wednesday night. Get on down to Bingay at Connections. GO SEE SASHA VELOUR AND TRINITY TAYLOR ON DEC 2ND AT CONNIES! And of course, after your eyes have been absolutely sparkled by these amazing queens, let your ears catch up at Geisha, the home of house!

Sashay away.

Love, Akika
